1. New day

“This is the place.  The second story window facing the alley should be open. We just need to jump to the roof from the adjacent building.”

“Are you ready?  Once we start, we only have about five minutes o grab what we can and get out.  We won’t be safe again until we get back to the slums.”

“Let’s go” We moved down the alley to the back of the adjacent building.  From there, we climbed to the roof using a drain pipe and positioned ourselves close to the open window of the target building.  We make the jump and then we are in.

We silently move down the hall; I enter a bedroom on the right and Ty enters a room on the left.  The room that I entered is the bedroom of a wealthy merchant and the room is lavishly decorated.  There are large expensive paintings on the wall and even a decorative armor on a mannequin.  There is a large bed with a purple and gold colored canopy, but I am not after any of these things.  I quickly searched the room and looted jewelry, cufflinks, and even some candlesticks.  Anything that I would be able to resell, if I was lucky some of these items would contain magic.

I come out into the hallway and see Ty coming out of his room with a smile on his face.  We could search more rooms, but our strategy has been effective so far as we do not stay long and risk getting caught. I give Ty a questioning look and he nods.  We jumped from the window back the way we came.  We continue to run along the roof jumping from building to building back towards the slums.  It may look suspicious, but once we get close to the dividing wall we will slip into the stormwater system and disappear.

Sure enough, some guards see us on the roofs and begin chasing us. It is too late however, now that we are close to the wall the buildings are closer together and there are less roads for the guards to follow us on.  Once we were crested a small hill in the city we moved to the ground and followed the water runoff path until there was nowhere else to go.  Here there was a small basin with a drain that was barred off.  Ty quickly moved one of the bars out of place and we were gone down the drain as well.  This rainwater system stretches through most of the wealthy district so we are able to plan escapes efficiently.

“Did you get what we were after” I asked Ty.

He pulled out a bluish clear glass orb from his bag.  “Another successful mission.  We will eat good tonight”

We followed the drain toward the river until we found the dug-out tunnel made by thieves before us.  This tunnel moves from the wealthy district below the dividing wall into the slums where we live.  I met Ty in the orphanage where we grew up.  However, we were only able to receive aid until we were nine.  We spent the last 4 years working for Perfidia in the thief’s guild doing jobs like this.  We climbed above ground and moved to our guilds base.  We use our secret code at the gate and go to meet with Perfidia.

“How did it go?” (Perfidia)

“It was a successful job” I replied while we emptied our bags and showed her the crystal orb.

“Good job.  I can give you 1 gold and 5 silver for this. Will you finally be taking a bigger job?  I think it is time that you start making more money for yourself and for the guild.” (Perfidia)

“No, we are quite happy living as we are for now.  Someday we will become adventurers and travel the world making a difference.” (Ty) We never wanted to be thieves but they offered us food and help becoming stronger.  This amount of money will let us live without taking any jobs for about 3 months.  We use this time to train ourselves to become stronger.

“Shame.  You may go for now.  I will call on you when there is another job that you may be interested in” (Perfidia)
